Life coaching is a practice of helping clients determine and achieve personal goals. A coach uses multiple methods to help clients with the process of setting and reaching goals.
Writing for the International Journal of Coaching in Organizations, Patrick Williams states:
"It is helpful to understand that both coaching and therapy have the same roots. Coaching evolved from three main streams that have flowed together:
- The helping professions such as psychotherapy and counseling.
- Business consulting and organizational development.
- Personal development training,
Many counselor’s tend to ascribe to a “Damage Model” of therapy. This model often reinforces a “Victimization” mentality by leading clients to describe how they have been hurt, solidifying an image of themselves as helpless in the past, ineffective in the present, and hopeless about the future.
My goal as a counselor and life coach is to teach simple and life changing skills. One example is called “Communication Guidelines.” I refer to this as my operating system that individuals can build their relationships upon. This simple yet effective approach can be used to:- Build friendships
- Enhance Communication
- Manage Conflicts
- Encourage Positive feedback
- Teach Active Listening Skills
- Reinforce Team Building at work
